I've been married for 3 years and 1 day today. Normally (does a pattern of 2 years count as "normally"??), I plan a vacation for our wedding anniversary. However, this year my adoring husband decided that work trumped vacation. His employee was scheduled to return from (her 4th!) maternity leave the week of our anniversary, so we postponed our trip by a few weeks. So, on our anniversary, we went to work like any other day, then went out for sushi dinner, and then went home and did the online check-in for our upcoming cruise. And then the stress started. Turns out, I had a blonde moment when I booked our flights because our return flight home leaves Seattle 6 hours before our boat docks in Seattle. OOPS! Good thing I caught it now, right? So I spent my anniversary night on the phone with my travel agent and the airline, arguing about how I refuse to pay a "change itinerary" fee that is MORE than my flight cost to begin with. And in the end, we decided to just chalk up the loss on the original tickets, and bought new tickets, with a different airline, and a MUCH better schedule. So we paid a little more, but now we have a nonstop flight, and even better, the flight leaves AFTER our boat docks!
And that, my friends, is why I will never let work trump vacation again. We will be out of town, on vacation in a new state every year for the rest of our anniversaries! Otherwise, it's just any other stressful, frustrating (and sometimes expensive) day.
And, to top it all off, I didn't even get to eat carrot cake, or drink out of my wedding champagne flutes.
The end.
